About
Julien Prudent obtained his Ph.D. in Cell Biology in 2011 from Claude Bernard Lyon 1 University (Lyon, France). During his Ph.D. in the laboratory of Prof. Germain Gillet, he investigated the roles of BCL-2 family proteins in calcium signalling during zebrafish embryonic development. In 2013, he joined the laboratory of Prof. Heidi McBride at McGill University (Montreal, Canada) as a postdoctoral fellow, where he studied the interplay between mitochondrial dynamics, organelle contact sites and cellular homeostasis. In 2016, he established his independent research group at the MRC Mitochondrial Biology Unit, University of Cambridge (Cambridge, UK). His laboratory has since focused on understanding how mitochondrial membrane remodelling and mitochondria–organelle communication regulate cellular homeostasis and cell fate, with particular interests in mitochondrial dynamics, membrane contact sites and mitochondrial DNA signalling. In September 2026, Julien Prudent joined the Imagine Institute in Paris, with an affiliation to the Cell Biology and Infection Department at the Pasteur institute, where his laboratory continues to investigate the molecular mechanisms linking mitochondrial architecture and inter-organelle communication to cellular signalling, inflammation and disease.
